Coca- Cola Addiction In Mexico

Updated: Dec 27, 2022

Hey Foodies, Let's Jump Right Into This One.

Coca- Cola!

When I See The Name Coca- Cola I Think Of My Grandfather John. Johnny Would Always Have A Six Pack Of Coca-Cola Sitting On The Kitchen Floor. Whenever I Think About The People I Know That Drink Coca- Cola, I Always Think About How Addicted And Loyal They Are To The Brand. And Then There's Always Their Competitor ....Pepsi. Pepsi And Coca- Cola Have Literally Been Competing With One Another Since Before I Was Born. No One Really Likes Both Of Them...It's Either One Or The Other.

In This Blog Post I Would Like To Talk About What's Going On NOW In Mexico, They're Fighting An Obesity Epidemic And The Results For Some Is Death. So How Did We Get Here...

Well Apparently Coca-Cola Previously Used The Real Deal Coke In Their Soda... Let's Just Take A Moment And Re-Read That Sentence... I Said They Previously Used Real Coke In Their Soda!!! And Sold It To People!!!

According to Just Think Twice " Coca-Cola’s history has been well-documented. The drink was invented in 1885 by John Pemberton, a pharmacist from Atlanta, Georgia, who made the original formula in his backyard. Pemberton’s recipe contained cocaine in the form of an extract of the coca leaf, which inspired the “Coca” part of the beverage’s name. The “Cola” comes from the kola nut (which contains caffeine, another stimulant).

When Coca-Cola was invented, cocaine was legal and a common ingredient in medicines. People thought it was safe to use in small amounts."

Let's Fast forward To Today... Coke Has Been Removed From The Coca- Cola (Thank You Sweet Baby Jesus). However, For The Residence Of Chiapas, Mexico (A Small Town In Mexico) Coca Cola Addiction Is Running Throughout Their Community. The Residence Of Chiapas, Mexico Are Experiencing An Obesity Epidemic...I Wonder If It's The Estimated 800 Liters Of Coca- Cola They Drink Per Year (The National Average Is 150 Liters Per Year). Diabetes Is The Second Leading Cause Of Death In Chiapas.

According To SBS News " a 2019 study by the Chiapas and Southern Border Multidisciplinary Research Center (Cimsur), each resident of the southern state drank more than 800 litres of Coke in a year. This equates to more than 3,000 cups a year."

So What's Really Going On There!?! After Doing Some Digging....The Water System In Chiapas Is Totally Jacked Up! It's Literally Easier To Get A Bottle Of Coca-Cola Then It Is To Get A Gallon Of Water. Most Of The Water Going Into This Community Goes Directly To The Coca-Cola Plant....Leaving The Residence With Clean Water A Few Times A Week. The Towns Drinking Water Was Tested By Fermin Reygadas And The Results Were Alarming...The Towns Water Had High Levels Of E- coli Bacteria.

Coca-Cola Is Cheaper And More Accessible Than Fresh Water In Chiapas, Mexico. What's The Answer To This Crisis? Coca- Cola Is A "Staple" In The Mexican Culture...We Don't Want To Remove It. Do We? Should We Leave It To The Residence To Figure Out OR Should Someone Step In (I Have No Clue As To Who That Someone Would Be)?

I'm On The Fence With This One Foodies...Send Me Your Thoughts.

Until Next Time. I'll Eat With You Later...Peace
